Hello Stephen,
sdbinst is linked without having a windows console.
it opens one on demand. if there is a problem in the early startup
it has no chance to print any messages.

sdbupd is a real console program and you can give it a parameter to use 
the program entry point of sdbinst instead of its own.

please try sdbupd --main SAPDB::Install::StartInstall::main

maybe it can tell us any hints.
