Mirrored log on raw device fails: 7.5.0.8 / RH 9

I set up a database using 7.5.0.8 with a raw device for the data volume 
and two log volumes (primary and mirrored). The database comes up OK, 
but without LOG_MIRRORED set. If I enable LOG_MIRRORED, the second MLOG 
volume is seen correctly, but when I restart the database it fails:

CAUSED EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN

I've changed ownership of all raw devices and their links to sdb.sdba.
