Thanks for the response, Elke. At least now I know where to go next time I
have an error.

It seems I have NPTL installed. I needed to use export
LD_ASSUME_KERNEL=~~~~~~~~~~~.

Anyone on this list have experience with this sort of setup, and hints on
things I need to watch out for?

    As written in the error code:
    Please check the output written to the file named knldiag
    (written in the rundirectory of your database).
    Did you do this? What does it tell you?
    If you checked this and even then have no clue what the
    problem may be: send this knldiag to the mailing list.
