is there something like a faq for database updates?
the databse is very large and it is used in a production webapplication.
So I have to plan an update very carefully.
Do you think I should wait for the next release?

I hope you didn't use the RPMs but the installer of MaxDB. If so, here are some easy steps:

Possibility 1:
- stop all running MaxDB stuff
- unpack the new version of MaxDB, run SDBINST
- when asked, enter the kernel installation to be upgraded
- start MaxDB again
- reload the system tables via DBMGUI

Possibility 2:
When asked, don't upgrade the installed kernel, but install a new MaxDB in parallel to the already installed one. You than can use backup to migrate the database to the new Kernel version. If everything works fine after some testing, you can switch the applikation the new database that's using the new MaxDB kernel
