Can't any more as we decided to throw away the installation. We needed the 
machine and it was just a test installation. :-}

However, the scripts that are used to start the db use another user and they 
work generally. So I'd say it's unlikely that the db was started as from root.  
Unfortunately I could not find out how the db got into this state. This left me 
in a kind of uncomfortable state...

Does this explain the strange mixture of reported db states?  I mean, even if 
the db wasn't started at all, all commands should report the same state, don't 
they?  Or is this a misunderstanding on my side?
