IMHO is does more sense to make more smaller ones since with only one big
volume you will not get the maximum througput (at least not with the
standard parameters) since there are only two datawriters.

It's always an iteration between number of volumes/parallel I/O and the
underlying subsystem to make sure you get good I/O rates and at the same
time no concurrent I/O since that will slow down.
