Did you mean to write "trailing" here?

If so, that means during reading CHAR and VARCHAR are truncated.  Is this 
compatible with the SQL standard for CHAR?  Until now I believed that reading a 
CHAR column always gives as many characters as were defined.  Otherwise I don't 
see the point in having this distinction...
