How long does your backup run in minutes? We are doing backup to disk on DB servers and it goes quite fast, in our case 2 to 3 minutes for more than 10Gb of backup size (the full backup) and below 1 minute for daily inceremental backups (which are between 500M and 1Gb in size). We then let the backupserver pick those backup files and write them to tape. Writing backups directly to tapes may keep MaxDB busy for a much longer time.
