You can do that if you are on the same endianess, e. g.
Big Endian:
HP-UX on PA-RISC
HP-UX on Itanium-2
Solaris on SPARC
AIX on Power
Linux on Power
Little Endian:
Linux on Itanium-2
Linux on X86_64
Linux on X86
Windows on Itanium-2
Windows on X86_64
Windows on X86
Solaris on X86_64
Tru64 on Alpha
In those groups you can do copies between systems but not across those
groups.
