Yes.  Two distinct issues 1. Symlinks not files and 2. Osx not liking files
without extensions.

It's an external USB drive formatted as ext4 and passed-through to a
virtual machine instance. I can access other files normally via NFS or SMB
so don't think the filesystem itself is the problem.

I've played with permissions but this doesn't seem to make any difference.
