Being a Windows 8 user, I found the simplest install would be to just download the Mayan VirtualBox appliance and import it, and Mayan would start up. It doesn't: I am left looking at a shell, with the command prompt "mayan@mayan-virtual:~$". I am in the directory '/home/mayan', but an 'ls' shows no files.
