You are right, it is shown in the install step 
(http://mayan.readthedocs.org/en/latest/intro/installation.html) but there 
is no clear mention it is a requirement in the docs. Perhaps splitting the 
install page in two parts, "binaries install" and "Mayan install" could do 
the trick.
