What you need is event notifications. The design decisions for these have been extensive (deduplication; scope: subscribe to an event type or a document's events, both; levels: critical, info; delivery: UI, email, etc). Hopefully with these settled down this feature can bee added soon. Ranjith's fork adds notification for workflows only which works well if that's is only what you need for now.
