MayaVi-1.x does not support the 3D widgets since it does not use the
vtkTkRenderWindowInteractor and only uses the older TkRenderWidget.
However, TVTK (http://svn.enthought.com/enthought/wiki/TVTK) fully
supports 3D widgets and a lot more. MayaVi2 also uses the render
window interactor more information here:
