I checked 9P. It's a nice stuff, but in reality I don't see it in near future on my stock debian testing desktop. To the contrary patching mc to add this feature is quite possible and much simpler, from my standpoint. It's just a simple "symlink tracking" it can't be *that* difficult... Maybe, just maybe, I'll be able to produce a patch for that, together with a friend of mine, would you guys be willing to add such a patch to the trunk?
