I do not know. I'm not the one who introduced vfs/Makefile.am.

There are no subtleties out there. I just wanted libvfs to be
buildable *somehow* because podfuk users started complaining. Whether
it is in Makefile.am, Make-mc.in or somewhere else, I do not care. [I
do not 100% understand how build system works. But this worked for me
(tm).]
