Everything looks much easier, at least under Slackware 8.0, look at this great howto: http://people.debian.org/~garabik/debian-utf8/HOWTO/howto.html He made a quick (dirty?) hack for the terminal type definition (linux+utf8)! Seems to work without all the black magic with enabling utf8 with slang (there's a utf8-patched version of slang 1.4.4 for debian, source is also available from debian) and ncurses.
