Editor Multi-Edit (ME - only on Windoze) does it in rather intuitive way:

When I type closing parenthesis, curlie, or bracket,
ME will highlight (using different background color) all text
from opening bracket to the closing one.
When cursor moves, highlight disappears.

I found this behavior very convenient and intuitive,
it's rather obvious what is being closed --
better than highlighting just opening and closing brackets.

Just my 0.02
