Hi there, I'm looking for two driven and intelligent undergraduate students
majoring in MCB, IB, or a related scientific field (chemistry, physics, etc)
to work with me in a neuroscience research lab.
I'm an MD/PhD student at UCSF getting my PhD in neuroscience, and I work in
the laboratory of Dr. Laurence H. Tecott in the Psychiatry Department.

I am studying the neural circuitry of emotion in transgenic mouse models. In
particular, we're interested in the role of the serotonin 1A receptor and
several other genes in regulating serotonin release and anxiety-like
behavior in transgenic mice. In general, we're trying to understand the ways
in which serotonin regulates mood and emotion, and to begin to develop a map
of the neural circuits that give rise to emotional behavior and experience.
Our long-term hope is that this work will lead to a better understanding of
mental illnesses like depression and anxiety disorders, and that it will
help us design better and more rational treatments for these devastating
disorders.

I have space to work with one or two undergraduate students starting part
time this school year and then full time for the summer of '06 and beyond. 
If all goes well,
its possible that this could count for independent research credit for the
student at Berkeley.

I enjoy mentoring undergraduate students- I view them as full members of our
research team, and spend a significant amount of time teaching them things
in the lab. Undergraduate students here work side-by-side with me and other
scientists at UCSF- the responsibilities are serious, but the possibilities
for discovery are wide-open. This is an ideal opportunity for undergraduate
students interested in a significant and serious research experience
studying one of the most vexing and fascinating scientific questions of our
time- how do the intricate interwoven neuronal connections of our brains
give rise to our deepest and most profound emotions? How does the activity
of large networks of nerve cells give rise to emotional behavior, from the
way a mother cares for her young to the way that animals will attack
intruders to defend their own turf? These are just some of the questions
that keep us occupied and enthralled by our work.

Interested student should be in their freshman or sophomore year at
Berkeley, and should have a 3.4 GPA or higher. If you fit these criteria,
