4. Association of Public Health Laboratories and 
Centersfor Disease Control and Prevention Offer
Laboratory Fellowships
Deadline: February 17, 2006
   The Association of Public Health Laboratories ( 
http://www.aphl.org/ ) works to safeguard the
public's health by strengthening public health 
laboratories in the United States and across the
world.
   The APHL fellowship programs, in collaboration 
with the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention ( http://www.cdc.gov/ ), prepare 
laboratory scientists for careers in public 
health and
environmental health laboratory practice.

   Applications are invited for the following programs:
   EID Advanced Laboratory Training Fellowship: 
One-year fellowship program designed for 
bachelor's
and master's level scientists. The program emphasizes the practical
   application of technologies, methodologies, and 
practices related to emerging infectious
diseases. Applicants must have completed a 
bachelor's or master's degree in biology,
   microbiology, biochemistry, virology, or a 
related discipline, or completed an accredited
medical technologist program by program initiation.

   EID Postdoctoral Laboratory Research 
Fellowship: Two-year fellowship program designed 
for
doctoral-level (Ph.D., M.D., or D.V.M.) scientists. The program has an emphasis
   on research or professional development in 
infectious diseases. Fellowships will be awarded 
to
conduct applied research or development in areas 
relevant to public health laboratory practice.
Possible areas of research include development 
and evaluation of diagnostic and subtyping
   techniques; antimicrobial sensitivity and 
assessment of mechanisms of resistance; 
principles and
practices of vector or animal control; emerging 
pathogens; and laboratory-epidemiology
interaction.
   Applicants must be U.S. citizens and must be 
able to start their appointment at the host
laboratory, as well as participate in an orientation session at CDC Atlanta.

   The annual stipend (2005) is $28,100 for 
fellows with bachelor's degrees, $31,322 for 
fellows
with master's degrees, and $38,547 for fellows with postdoctorate degrees.

Computational Biochemistry Research Group

Extraordinarily gifted entry-level scientists and

scientific advances in the field of biochemistry 
and fundamentally transforming the process of
drug discovery.
Entry-level team members will be working closely 
with a number of the worldís leading biologists,
chemists, and computer scientists, and will have 
the opportunity not only to participate in an
exciting entrepreneurial venture with 
considerable economic potential, but to make 
groundbreaking
contributions within the fields of biology, chemistry, and medicine.

D. E. Shaw Research and Development, LLC, is 
seeking top graduates of chemistry, biology, 
physics,
computer science, engineering, and mathematics

extraordinary records of achievement in the 
natural
sciences and/or scientific programming, 
exceptional quantitative abilities, and superb
communication skills.

The groupís current research activities are aimed 
at the discovery and development of innovative
scientific techniques to direct unprecedented 
computational power toward the solution of key
problems in the fields of biomolecular simulation 
and design. This research effort is being
financed by the D. E. Shaw group, an investment 
and technology development firm with approximately
$17 billion in aggregate capital. The project was 
initiated by the firm's founder, Dr. David E.
Shaw, and operates under his direct scientific leadership.
