1.  UPCOMING DEADLINES THROUGH EARLY  NOVEMBER, 2005

OCTOBER 21:  CENTER FOR RACE AND GENDER

The Center for Race and Gender (CRG) at the University of California 
Berkeley, announces the availability of grants of $200 to $1,000 to 
fund undergraduates for research or creative projects that address 
issues of race and gender.

Applications can be submitted by any Berkeley undergraduate not 
graduating at the end of the semester.

Grants will be awarded for periods of up to six months from the start date.

OCTOBER 27:  MCNAIR SCHOLARS PROGRAM
Program  offers $2800 summer funding plus numerous enrichment activities,
ample staff support, and a close community of about 25 scholars.

*Must be interested in obtaining a Ph.D. degree
*Must have completed more than 60 units by June 2006
*Must have at least a GPA of 3.0 by the end of Fall 2005
*Must be either
1)  a low-income** and first generation college student (one parent 
does not have a BA)
or      2)  underrepresented in higher education (African-American, 
Latino, or Native Am.)
*Must be either a citizen or a permanent resident of the United States
*Must be enrolled at UC Berkeley during Spring 2006
*Must be available to do full time research in the Summer of 2006

These sessions will address the application, the review process, the 
mission of the McNair Scholars Program, its benefits, program 
specifics, and research issues. As well, Dr. Harold Campbell, Program

Haddad, Program Advisor; Alison Kaufman, Graduate Student Tutor and 
several former McNair students will be there to answer your questions.

NOVEMBER 1:  CENTER FOR MIDDLE EASTERN STUDIES UNDERGRAD. RESEARCH GRANT

Eligibility:   U.C. Berkeley undergraduate students only. Priority 
will be given to students with declared majors or minors in Middle 
Eastern Studies.

Funding:        Grants for up to $1,000 are available to defray the 
costs of domestic and international travel while conducting research 
for undergraduate senior thesis projects that focus on Middle 
East-related topics. Please note that this funding applies to airfare 
only, and that all grants will be paid as reimbursements upon 
completion of travel. Grantees will be required to provide specific 
travel documentation in order to receive reimbursement.

NOVEMBER 4:  BIOLOGY FELLOWS PROGRAM to provide research 
opportunities for undergraduates in the biological sciences during 
the academic year,   especially for students whose financial need 
would make such work difficult on an unpaid
basis. Twenty grants of $1800 will be awarded for the Spring, 2006
semester.  Students should have a lab placement when they apply.

research before you graduate, and to help make your application to

Workshop B, Writing a Research Proposal

Students are encouraged to attend Workshop A, which gives a general
overview of research opportunities and strategies for getting
started, before attending Workshop B.  Students should come to the
workshop with a specific topic in mind, and in the case of a 
laboratory project, should be in a lab before coming to the workshop.
