The following message is official and has been approved by the appropriate authorities to be posted to this list. ~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~!~ *Look at health in a whole new light.* The *Health Service Internship*(HSI) program is a unique *service learning* opportunity dedicated to examining health and well being in terms of *social* , *political*, and *economic factors*.
HSI is a *2-unit*, semester long *internship program *that places students in *public health* related community organizations throughout the Bay Area. In the past, organizations have ranged across a broad spectrum, including therapeutic nursery schools AIDS clinics, homeless shelters, and environmental health publications. Intern duties have included policy analysis, advocate work, one-on-one patient casework, STD testing and counseling, community education, and much more. The internship experience is supplemented and enhanced by a *weekly discussion session*. Discussion topics have included the roles of race, socioeconomic status, politics, mass media, and education in determining health, and how public health has addressed issues of violence, sex education, homelessness, AIDS and mental health. These small group discussions also provide an opportunity for interns to discuss their individual internship placements, allowing them to learn from each other's experiences. HSI is open to all UC Berkeley undergraduates, and students of *all majors* and backgrounds are encouraged to apply.
