Volunteers Needed to Inspire Girls in Science, Math and Technology! Girls Incorporated of Alameda County is seeking volunteers for a variety of after-school enrichment programs serving girls in San Leandro and East Oakland. At Girls Inc., we provide over 15 after-school enrichment and skills building programs for girls in 1st through 12th grades. We provide programs and services in schools in East Oakland and San Leandro, and at our facility in San Leandro, serving mainly low income/low resource girls and families. Girls Inc. emphasizes science, math and technology in several of our programs, as we see these as key areas for girls to feel successful and encouraged. Our SMART program (Science, Math and Relevant Technology) works with elementary and middle school age girls after school to engage them in hands-on science and math activities and experiential learning. We are currently looking for volunteers to help one afternoon a week in the SMART program during after-school hours (days and times depend on the school site). Volunteers spend about 1 hours a week in the program, working with the girls during activities, asking them open-ended questions, and modeling behavior. Volunteers develop meaningful relationships with the girls and contribute to their success in school. This is a great way to connect with and spark curiosity in young girls! We are also in need of volunteers for the All STARS Middle School Program, which meets five days a week at 3 school sites. Volunteers spend one afternoon a week with the girls, and the program focuses on technology, sports, homework assistance, and peer relationship building. This is another great opportunity to be a role model for smart, motivated girls!
