Goldwater Scholarship provides up to $7,500 per year for undergraduate educational expenses. Sophomores and juniors majoring in mathematics, sciences, and engineering who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents in the upper quarter of their class (typically a minimum 3.5 GPA) are eligible to apply. Research opportunity at UCSF Hi there, I want you to let you all know about a research opportunity for two talented and motivated Berkeley undergraduates here at UCSF. I'm an MD/PhD student at UCSF getting my PhD in neuroscience in Dr. Laurence Tecott's laboratory, and I'm looking for two talented Berkeley undergraduates to come work with me here. Our work is likely to be of particular interest to MCB/neuroscience, Neuropsychology, and Cognitive Science majors- please pass this info on to any interested students you know. A little about what we do: In the Tecott lab, we work on the role of serotonin in regulating the neural circuitry of emotion. Towards this overall end, we employ molecular approaches to genetically alter the serotonin system in transgenic and knockout mice, as well as neurochemical and behavioral assays to measure the effects of these genetic manipulations at the levels of single cells, neural circuits, and ultimately whole animal behavior. In particular, we focus on the role of the 5-HT1A receptor and the transcription factor CREB in regulating the activity and development of serotonin neurons, and the role of these processes in regulating emotional behavior. I'm looking for two talented undergraduates to join our research team. In particular, I'm looking for freshman and/or sophomores who are interested in research and willing to commit to working ~15 hrs/week during the school year and full time over the summer, and hopefully who are willing to stay on for several years here. Interested students should have evidence of academic excellence (such as a GPA of 3.5 or above, and SAT I scores of 1400 or higher) and a personal interest in doing scientific research. This position is unpaid, but is a valuable learning experience in the real world of doing scientific research at the front lines of discovery, and it can count for independant research credit at Berkeley. I know that the time commitment is significant, but I put significant time into mentoring Berkeley undergraduates who come here and I think students who come here get a lot out of it. I spent a lot of time doing research in a cell biology lab when I was an undergraduate at Columbia (approx. 5 yrs ago) and had a wonderful experience that led me to go to graduate school (and which gave me a first author paper). I hope to give undergraduates who come here to work with me a similarly fulfilling experience.
