The Expression and Molecular Biology Core (EMB Core) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboraotry is looking for a part-time student assistant to begin in January 2006. It is a great opportunity to get your foot into a real research lab, learning from the basics. Freshman preferred. Please see attached position description for details. John Tainer and Pricilla Cooper centered at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. The main focus at the EMB Core is to generate expression constructs of DNA repair proteins and/or protein domains, to optimize soluble expression of target protein and/or protein complexes, to purify the recombinant proteins for crystallization and subsequent structural studies, as well as to investigate protein-protein and protein-DNA interactions in DAN repair machinery. General Position Description: You will be under the direction and supervision of the head Scientist in the laboratory of the EMB Core at LBNL to support the SBDR Program Project that investigates the structural and biochemical characterization of proteins and protein complexes involved in DNA repair You will provide assistance to the staff scientists and technical staff in maintaining day-to-day operation of the laboratory. Essential Duties & Responsibilities Perform routine laboratory tasks, such as wash, dry and sterilize glassware and plasticware. Operate autoclaves, washers and distilled water system. Prepare stock solutions, buffers, media and protein gels using standard protocols. Responsible for routine maintenance of the storage freezers, refrigerators, water bath, and incubators. Responsible for organizing and daily maintenance of the general working areas. Receive and stock supplies and reagents. Keep track of supply usage and generate monthly purchase list. Organize and file purchase records. Marginal Duties & Responsibilities Assist basic experimental procedures in the laboratory, including plasmid DNA prep, preparation of bacterial competent cells, agarose gel electrophoresis, SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting. Maintain detailed records of experimental procedures. Hour Requirement: Variable, 6 (min.)-10 (max.) hours per week (in 2-3 days per week). Hourly Compensation: Depending on experience.
