NIH Academy Post-baccelureate Program Dear UC-Berkeley seniors- As your undergraduate career comes to a finale, there are many options you have before you enter professional school. Post-baccalaureate programs are an excellent way to take a break from academia, while staying current in science and developing the skills it takes to become a successful physician/scientist, etc. The NIH Academy post-baccalaureate program is a program designed for college graduates interested in biomedical research and eliminating health disparities. Health disparities are differences in the incidence, prevalence, mortality, and burden of disease and other adverse health conditions that exist among specific population groups in the United States. In this program, you have the opportunity to engage in 1-2 years of research under leading investigators at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, MD. In addition, there are two educational components to the program: seminars and workshops on topics related to health disparities and general knowledge and skills-development workshops. The program itself is quite small, consisting of about 15 students from very diverse backgrounds. This, along with being a residential program, facilitates a close-knit community and the opportunity to interact with some of most talented and motivated young scientists in the country. As a current NIH Academy fellow, I have really enjoyed being a part of the stimulating intellectual environment the NIH fosters, and taking a break before I begin medical school next fall. The program offers a livable stipend, and the chance to live near one of the greatest cities in the country, the nations capitol.
