~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TO: MCB Graduating Seniors ________________________________ I am a Principal Investigator at Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute (CHORI), and have a full-time job for a Scientific Research Associate that I would like to fill in June/July of 2006. This position is currently held by a 2005 MCB graduate who plans to leave for graduate school, and I would like to fill her shoes from the talented pool of 2006 MCB graduates, if possible. In the past, I have found it helpful to hire students during their senior year, as this gives me an opportunity to see how they perform, and also gives the students a chance to see how they like the work before they make a commitment. In past years, I have offered a full-time job (starting after graduation) to the undergraduate who seems best suited to the position. The full-time position pays about $40,000 per year, and includes benefits. It is an ideal arrangement for undergraduates who are planning to apply to professional school (Ph.D. or M.D.) or go into the biotech sector, but who would like first to take a year off to gain some additional experience. The work entails functional genomics, principally genotyping and gene expression analysis. I run the Functional Genomics Core at CHORI, where we have put in place a number of high-throughput assays. The work is of a high-throughput nature, relying heavily on high-tech instrumentation and robotics. Consequently, I am currently looking to interview top-notch MCB seniors for immediate employment. Students with or without work-study credits are invited to contact me. I will pay students $12 an hour during the coming semester, and will make a decision on offering a full-time position by May. Applicants should have lab experience (preferably outside of their coursework) and excellent quantitative skills, and show evidence of academic strength. The successful candidate will be highly energetic, very organized, a good communicator, and willing to work in a high- throughput environment.
