Research Position at UCSF
POSTING: Our laboratory in the Division of Vascular Surgery at UCSF is seeking recent graduates who are interested in participating in scientific research in vascular biology and vascular surgery. Our laboratory focuses on the transcriptional regulation of matrix metalloproteinase genes in animal models of vascular disease, and has defined novel transcription factor/genome interactions in vivo. Research techniques include experimental models of clinically relevant vascular surgery, Real Time PCR, transgenic mouse cloning and construction, cell biology and analysis of transcriptional regulation in vitro and in vivo. Candidates must be hard-working, motivated and have prior laboratory experience. Molecular biology experience is preferred. Previous appropriately motivated individuals and research associates in this laboratory have authored or co-authored manuscripts and presented at national scientific meetings. These positions are ideal for individuals who are seeking further training in medical or biomedical sciences. There are concurrent opportunities to observe complex vascular surgery, interact with patients and learn about the clinical management of cardiovascular disease. Please email a brief statement of interest which includes basic information about you and your CV (with all relevant classes listed) and a copy of your transcript to [EMAIL PROTECTED] ======================= 2. Research Opportunity at Fdn for Biological Conservation and Research RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY I have a hypothesis that sexual reproduction both allows variation and maintains an integrated genetic system because the genes are on chromosomes, and it is the balance of the two of these that gives it such an advantage. A leading question in evolutionary biology is: How could sexual reproduction evolve, given that one half the genes are lost each generation? That is, each parent passes on only half its genes if it reproduces sexually, while asexual forms pass on all their genes each generation. Natural selection favors those organisms who pass on the most genes. This hypothesis of how sex evolved can only be demonstrated with a computer simulation. I need a competent student to do the computer simulation to show the feasibility of my hypothesis. The student must be extremely knowledgeable and skilled at computer simulation and know some genetics and at least a small amount of evolutionary theory. The simulations would be of a sexual population and an asexual population, both with chromosomes, and undergoing evolution through time. The student researcher would have the option of having his or her name on the paper when it is published, and being recognized for making a major contributing to one of the most important problems in evolutionary theory. He or she will also have the opportunity to learn a great deal and have a valuable research experience. Additionally, I intend to arrange for the student to receive academic credit as compensation for the work done. My contact information follows. It is better to contact me by phone or e-mail than postal mail.
