American Red Cross @ Cal presents Disease of the Wind chronicling the Measles Initiative Campaign Each year measles kills nearly 480,000 children. Join ARC @ Cal for popcorn and a moving documentary starring Jane Seymour and eight middle school students in Africa and learn more about the Measles Initiative Campaign, a joint effort led by the American Red Cross, the UN, Unicef, and the World Health Organization to eradicate the leading vaccine-preventable childhood killer in the world. The Measles Initiative was launched in 2001 as an effort to control measles death in Africa by vaccinating children 15 years and younger. At the end of 2005, nearly 200 million children had been vaccinated. After 2005, the Measles Initiative plans to continue working in the remaining African countries and expand into Asia and begin its largest ever measles vaccinating campaign. The film's director and producer, Robert Bilheimer, is an Academy Award nominee for his film Cry of Reason, a profile of the South African anti-apartheid leader Beyers Naude. A Closer Walk was conceived with the late Jonathan Mann, architect of the World Health Organization's response to global AIDS. Narrated by Glenn Close and Will Smith, the film includes profiles of people living with AIDS around the world and interviews with dozens of others His Holiness the Dalai Lama, UN General Secretary Kofi Annan, U2's Bono, and dozens of other individuals living with and affected by HIV/AIDS. Now in its third semester, PHA gives people like you a way to explore topics of interest, educate the community, and express your concerns in the field of public health. Articles are written by students for both members of the Berkeley campus and the surrounding community. Join PHA this semester and make a difference! To see past issues, click here. Next Issue: This semester's theme is Marginalized Populations, and is scheduled for publication in early May. We need your articles on these populations that have been pushed to the edge! What we need from YOU: By March 20th, submit a 250-word summary of your proposed topic on marginalized populations. You will be notified within two days if you are selected to write a full article. Some potential topics/populations are: Sex reassignment surgery Immigrant workers who are uninsured Sex workers and healthcare Recent college grads (This age group is the least insured of all!) What else you got?
