Here's a brief bio on Dr. Micco:
Guy Micco, MD, was chair of the Alta Bates ethics committee for many
years.  He regularly teaches
medical humanities as well as clinical courses in the Berkeley-UCSF
Joint Medical Program, and is
a consultant in palliative care.

    Calling All Writers:

    Theory, a new undergraduate journal of science here at Berkeley, is
recruiting staff writers!  The  goal of Theory is to take cutting
edge research and science on the Berkeley campus and in the Bay Area,
and to present it in a format that is accessible and appealing to the
general Berkeley populace.  If you have an interest in science,

4.      Field Study Internship Program is NOW accepting Fall 2006
APPLICATIONS!!!

Are you interested in shadowing a physician? The Field Study
Internship (FSI) Program is now accepting applications for the Fall
semester. This program allows interns to enter the health care
setting and experience the day-to-day workings of the medical
profession. Past physicians with the program have had various
specialties, including cardiology, pediatrics, and surgery. Through
the course of the semester, interns shadow one Bay Area physician for
6-8 hours/week and attend a weekly 2-hour discussion section. During
these small discussion sections, interns have an opportunity to share
their shadowing experiences and discuss pertinent issues facing the
medical field. Interns receive 3 units P/NP  from the School of Public Health.

5.      Available starting 5/2006: Laboratory technician position in a cancer
biology lab at UC Irvine

QUALIFICATIONS: A bachelor's degree in quantitative science (e.g. molecular
biology, chemistry, physiology, microbiology, etc).  Some practical
experience in a molecular biology research laboratory.  Strong
organizational and record keeping skills are essential.  Creative,
independent, inquisitive individual with the ability to faithfully follow
directions.

JOB DESCRIPTION: This position will entail designing and performing diverse
molecular biology experiments under the direct supervision of the PI.
Techniques employed in this cancer biology laboratory include molecular
cloning, mammalian cell culture, flow cytometry, PCR, gel electrophoresis,
Western blotting, transient and stable transfection of mammalian cells, RNAi
gene-knockdown, fluorescence microscopy, and the use of genetically modified
mice.  The individual will be partially responsible for the care, breeding,
and maintenance of a small transgenic and knockout mouse colony.  Record
keeping for both the laboratory and the mouse colony will be an important
part of this position.  The successful candidate will have a strong working
understanding of molecular biology, experience working in a research lab,
the ability to work and think independently, a strong desire to learn,
excellent organizational skills, and will be highly self-motivated.  Those
considering graduate school in the future are strongly encouraged to apply.

6.      DAVID SCHOLARS PROGRAM, $16,500

Each year, the Nathan and Violet David Scholars Program gives
talented students $16,500 and the opportunity to participate in
undergraduate research in the sciences. It is the mission of this
program to facilitate positive social change by enabling students
with promising talent, but financial need to participate in
undergraduate research, gain admission to a competitive graduate
programs, and thus have the choice to pursue scientific careers at
the highest level. Prospective applicants must be interested in
conducting lab-based research.
