The following message is official and has been approved by the appropriate authorities to be posted to this list. Dear MCB Majors who plan to participate in our MCB 2006 Commencement:
I've sent out a number of emails, pulling lists from various sources other that mcb-infoline. This one final call to all of you. If you haven't already signed up for our commencement ceremony on Friday, May 19, at 7 pm at the Greek Theater, you have until Friday, 4/21 to do so. Here's how: http://mcb2.berkeley.edu/undergrad. Following is some important information regarding: 1. TICKETS for commencement 2. SPECIAL SEATING for guest (wheelchairs, people who can't manage stairs, etc.) 3. STUDENT SPEAKER at commencement - deadline for speech 4/27, 3 pm *****TICKETS***** This holds true only if you've signed up on line!! We will be distributing your 6 free commencement tickets out of the Undergraduate Affairs Office, 2083 VLSB, between 9-12, M-F, April 24-28 only. The tickets will be in labeled envelopes ready for you to pick up. Additional tickets will be on sale through Cal Performances beginning on Monday, May 1, for a cost of $2.50 each. Each graduating senior will be limited to 6 purchased tickets. I would like to remind you of a few things about the day of the ceremony. CELL PHONES (...NOT) Out of respect to the faculty, guest speaker and your fellow graduates, we ask that you not use cell phones during the ceremony and will ask you to turn them off if we see you using them. (You can do it! It's only 2 hours.) STAY UNTIL THE END Plan to stay until the very end of the ceremony. We expect you to meet us backstage at the Greek at 6 pm, because the procession of 500 students and 20 faculty will begin promptly at 7 pm. We will end close to 9 pm. It can be cold at the Greek - wear warm clothes underneath your gown. Encourage your family & friends to dress appropriately (layers), to bring along stadium cushions (those cement seats are hard and cold) and to carry a snack to hold them over until after the ceremony. We'll send out more specific instructions to you closer to the date. See you next week when you come to pick up your tickets. *****NEED FOR SPECIAL SEATING FOR GUESTS?***** Please let me know if you have any guests who will require special seating or wheelchair seating at the Greek Theater. Special seating is for parties with elderly, people who can't manage stairs, people with canes, wakers, broken limbs, very pregnant women, etc. Deadline to let me know: Monday, May 1. *****Student Speaker at Commencement***** Each spring, the MCB Department holds auditions for the undergraduate Commencement speaker. The audition is open to all MCB seniors participating in Commencement. At the audition, speakers stand before an audience of MCB peers, staff, and faculty to present their own Commencement speech. After hearing all the speeches, the audience convenes to compare notes and select the person who will best represent the graduating class at Commencement. Selection Criteria The speeches will be evaluated on the following: Content: The content should be entertaining, meaningful, and easy to follow. It should appeal to all MCB students regardless of emphasis, as well as to families and faculty. Successful speeches of past years have focused on the MCB, rather than Berkeley, experience. Presentation: The delivery should be engaging and appropriate to the occasion. The speaker should be easy to hear and understand, as well as rehearsed and comfortable speaking in front of very large audiences. Length: The actual speech cannot be longer than five minutes to the second. To Audition: Sign up to audition by bringing a copy of your speech to the MCB Undergraduate Affairs Office (2083 VLSB) by Thursday, April 27 at 3 PM. Your audition time will be confirmed via e-mail. Auditions will be held on Tuesday, May 2, 2006 from 3:30-5 pm in 2040 VLSB -- ^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^_^ Anne Aaboe (510) 643-7473 (phone) Manager, Undergraduate Affairs Office (510) 642-2208 (fax) 2083 Valley Life Sciences Building [EMAIL PROTECTED] Berkeley, CA 94720-3200 ---------------------------------------------------------------- The above message does not necessarily represent the views or opinions of MCBcDNA, mcbUSA, the MCB Department, or UC Berkeley.
