more could you ask for?

This is a provocative documentary that critiques the
U.S. position on population control and the ethics of
holding clinical trials in developing nations.
Unfortunately, after the documentaryís release, it was
subsequently banned from being screened in the United
States, and it is no longer distributed in any
country. Take this opportunity to watch an in-depth
story of Bangladeshi women and the human rights abuses
they suffer from clinical trials.

Documentary Introduction:
In the slums of Dhaka, Bangladesh, many women were
suffering from side effects of the new and unproven
birth control device Norplant, which had been
implanted within their arms. Some women trekked back
to the clinic more than a dozen times to have the
Norplant removed, but clinic workers refused to help.
The Bangladeshi women did not know that Norplant was
an experimental device, nor did they consent to be
involved in a clinical trial. Yet in 1983, the
"official" report on the first phase of Norplant
trials boasted, "Norplant is a highly effective, safe,
and acceptable method [of birth control] among
Bangladeshi women." These inhumane trials in
Bangladesh were conducted by USAID.

USAIDís "solution" to this core problem has not been
to provide basic health care or education, but rather
to provide "expanded access to, increased use of, and
improved quality of family planning and reproductive
health services; increased contraceptive prevalence
and continuation; [and] improved womenís reproductive
health." ñ Gracie Hsu
