24521/Sr. Laboratory Technician II

H3401-Department of Epidemiology
Position - Full-time, Mon-Fri. (wknds/eve/holidays), 40 hours per week
Salary range: $26,248-$32,811 (depending on experience and qualifications)

Collect specimens, perform serological assays and work with a
repository of frozen specimens for epidemiological studies of
infectious diseases. Responsible for key aspects of clinical research
projects defining the natural history of the AIDS retrovirus in
gay/bisexual men and intravenous drug users. Collect, log-in, process
and inventory specimens received for study clinics. Perform ELISA,
PCR and other serological assays on specimens. Enter data, print
barcoded labels, generate reports and order supplies. Separation of
blood samples into plasma, serum, and lymphocytes. Maintain large
repository of frozen specimens. Perform phlebotomy. Independence will
be encouraged in the conduct of the laboratory affairs as well as the
initiation of individual research projects related to the general
mission of the laboratory. Other duties as assigned by lab manager
and lead technicians. Familiar with centrifuge,pipets,ELISA
reader/washer,cell counter,autoclave,PC.

Qualifications: B.S./B.A. degree in biological sciences or
equivalent. Sterile technique, Universal precautions, infectious
goods shipping, basic biology essential, immunology, virology and
serology helpful. 1 year of general laboratory experience. Phlebotomy
experience desirable or willingness to be trained a must, rotate
through emergency pager schedule, hours vary.

Position - Full-time; Mon-Fri., some Sat., weekend; 37.5 hours per week
Salary range: $33,836-$42,295 (depending on experience and qualifications)

Research Technician/Supervisor: Responsible for serological testing
and the supervision of day to day operations of a large research lab
studying the natural history of AIDS and other infectious
disease-related epidemiological studies. To perform serological
testing and provide accurate and proficient results. To help develop
and carry out new techniques for the various studies ongoing in the
lab. To supervise and instruct lab staff and students working in the
lab and assist with performing various procedures, contribute to the
writing of laboratory reports, protocols, laboratory standard
operating procedures, grants and proposals. To supervise and assist
with the management of a large biological specimen repository
including emergency pager monitoring of low temperature freezers.
Participate in maintaining and ordering lab supplies, overseeing lab
equipment maintenance including contracts and records of lab
equipment. Maintain general lab record keeping. Independent thinking
and action is necessary in the conduct of laboratory affairs and also
for individual research that may be undertaken related to the general
mission of the laboratory.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in biology, or related science. A
master's degree in a biomedical science is preferred. Knowledge of
epidemiology, immunology, virology and serology required, extensive
experience in ELISA testing and other serological procedures
required. A minimum of 1 year of experience in a comparable
laboratory.
