Position available: West Nile Virus Hotline Student Assistant

Qualifications:
Students must be able to type accurately and quickly. Familiarity 
with MS Access and Excel is a plus, but not necessary. Students must 
be able to multi-task and answer a high volume of phone calls. An 
interest in Public Health and Biology is preferred.

Position description:
The California Department of Health Services is recruiting students 
who are able to work part-time as soon as possible, specifically in 
the morning and afternoon shifts. The students would work in the West 
Nile virus program at $12 per hour. The position is in Richmond, 
California at the State Health Building at 850 Marina Bay Parkway.

Students will be answering the California West Nile virus hotline 
(1-800-WNV-BIRD), which received over 100,000 calls and online 
reports in 2005. Students determine the bird species, testability of 
dead bird, location, and other pertinent information and enter the 
information into a database. A key function of this position is to 
inform the public about West Nile virus. Additionally, students will 
be working with local agencies and testing laboratories throughout 
California to arrange for the collection, shipping, and testing of 
birds. Students receive direction and guidance from the biologists of 
the Dead Bird Surveillance Program.

A California driver's license and insurance are preferred, as driving 
a state vehicle may be necessary.
