1. De-Cal Class: Jade Ribbon Campaign

Join the Jade Ribbon Campaign DeCal and the fight against Hepatitis B
and Liver Cancer in the Asian and Asian American population!

More than 10% of Asians and Asian Americans carry the Hepatitis B
virus. Vaccination programs have not been effective, since most
Asians and Asian-American carriers are infected at birth. Due to a
lack of education and public health policy to address Asian carriers
of Hepatitis B, most do not know that they have the disease and do
not treat it or prevent transmission to the next generation. Of those
who do not get treatment, 25% will die from liver cancer or cirrhosis.

The Jade Ribbon Campaign DeCal will provide opportunities for
students to understand Hepatitis B issues and gain real-life public
health outreach experience. Students will be working in the local and
national community to spread awareness and influence care of
Hepatitis B carriers.

This course is an invaluable opportunity for premed students, as well
as those concerned with Asian American and public health issues.

2. Looking for an attendant / $10/hour

I am a third-year student at UC Berkeley. I have a physical disability which
causes significant muscle weakness, requiring me to use a motorized
wheelchair. Also, as I have very limited upper body strength, I need
physical help with many basic activities. I'm looking for a few
daytime/evening attendants to accompany me, and assist me in classes and
with daily activities. These include picking up and lifting books and other
things, simple personal care assistance, very basic meal preparation, and
any other situations that come up during the day requiring physical
assistance.

I live two blocks from campus (southside), and the job is mostly on and
around campus. Pay starts at $10+/hr. Applicant must be non-smoker.
Excellent references preferred. No experience necessary. Prefer male college
student.

I need attendants who are:
reliable/punctual (very important as I cannot function without help)
patient (some things I do and need done take a long time)
good at taking instructions (I need to tell people what I need done as
things come up)
trustworthy
responsible
If you're interested in the job, please fill out the short application
(http://www.crotoan.com/files/attendant_app_short.rtf) and email or fax it
to me. I prefer to receive this application before speaking with applicants,
but if you have problems accessing it, please just call or email. Also
please specify any days/times you are available to work (between 10am and
10pm).

phone: (415) 925-9866 (ask for Philip or Nancy)

Also looking for someone to get me ready for bed, give me showers, and get
me ready in the morning. The shift will be a minimum of 12 hours. I like to
get more sleep on the weekends, so the weekend shift will be closer to 14
hours. On average, after training, it takes about 2 hours to get me ready
for bed and 3 hours to get me ready in the morning (about an extra hour for
morning or night showers, about 3 times per week). This includes a physical
therapy stretching routine that you'll be trained to do. For the rest of the
12 hours, I'll need occasional help getting repositioned, usually 2-4 times
a night for about 15 minutes each. The rest of the time can be used for my
attendant to sleep. Hours are somewhat flexible, but once we agree on the
hours, they'll need to stay the same. Weeknight hours will be approximately
10pm to 10am, and weekend hours will be approximately 10pm to 12pm the next
morning.

Pay starts at $125 for the first 12 hours and $12/hr. for additional hours,
potentially with health insurance. I'm looking for someone to work 3-4
nights per week, to include Saturday (10pm-1pm) and one other weekend night.
This job requires no previous training or experience, though it is a plus.
It would also be good to have someone who could commute to my parents' house
in Marin County, but it isn't essential.

Same instructions as above for applying. Thanks.

3. Research Opportunities in High-throughput Protein Crystallography

Research opportunities in High-throughput protein crystallography
are available in Dr. Li-Wei Hung's group at the Lawrence Berkeley
National Laboratory. Projects including (1)robotic crystallization of
targets from two NIH structural genomics centers, (2)development of
cryo crystal harvesting techniques, (3)data mining/statistical
analysis of crystallization events, and (4)solving structures of
important drug
targets are open for the participation of highly motivated
undergraduate students. Either URAP or Student Assistant options
will be possible.

Previous relevant bench work experience is desirable but not
required. Opportunities will be provided for you to learn
crystallization, crystal data collection, and/or protein production
(PCR, gel electrophoresis, cell growth, Western blot or dot blot
analysis, UV,FPLC and etc.)

Please contact Dr. Minmin Yu if interested.
