*Fiat Lux Event: Out of Frame: Past and Present Visions of the UC's City of Intellect Chris Newfield & Seth Rosenfeld

*Monday, October 1, 2012 - 17:00

Maude Fife Room, 315 Wheeler Hall, UCB

Through the Fiat Lux project, Ansel Adams pictured one of the most turbulent periods in UC history, the 1960s. Yet his photos give little evidence of tumult. The university appears as a pristine, calm, sparsely populated place. Seth Rosenfeld, author of the new book Subversives: The FBI's War on Student Radicals, and Reagan's Rise to Power, and Chris Newfield, author of Unmaking the Public University: The Forty-Year Assault on the Middle Class, will reflect on Adams' framing of the "City of Intellect," exploring what these images reveal, disguise, and foretell about the UC's past and present. Co-sponsored by the Berkeley Faculty Association and the Making UC Futures Townsend Center Working Group.

* reception to follow
This event is free and open to everyone on a first-come, first-seated basis.*

Apply to become a part of the UC Berkeley Suicide Prevention Walk Team

*Apply to become a part of the UC Berkeley Suicide Prevention Walk Team! Opportunities include committees in publicity, admin, finance, recruitment and volunteer coordination.

Last year, we held our first walk supporting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP). We had over 180 participants, and raised more than any other California AFSP Campus Walk. This allowed us to support programs such as the Interactive Screening Program (ISP), which is being used right here at Cal to help more students get the support they need. This year we want to reach an even larger audience and build even more support for issues of mental health and suicide prevention, and we encourage you to help build upon this effort!

Team members will be expected to commit 3 hours per week during the fall semester, which will include one hour of meeting time and two hours of outside work for their team. During the spring semester the commitment will vary from 4-5 hours per week.

Come to one of our INFO SESSIONS - Location: 183 Dwinelle
1. October 1 at 6:30pm
2. October 8 at 6:30pm

Fill out your online application here, due October 12th: http://tinyurl.co/ucbsuicidepreventionteam

*Global Poverty & Practice Minor Info Sessions

*The Global Poverty & Practice Minor is the largest Minor on the UC Berkeley campus, providing students with the knowledge and real-world experience to become dynamic participants in the fight against poverty. The Minor is organized around five courses and a Practice Experience, through which students are given the opportunity to connect the theories and practice of global poverty alleviation. The Practice Experience may be completed in the U.S. or abroad and financial support is available for students.

Students from all disciplines are encouraged to undertake the Minor and investigate the ways in which the requirements supplement their major field of study.

We encourage you to learn more about the Minor by visiting our website: http://blumcenter.berkeley.edu/gppminor and attending a GPP Minor Info Session on one of the following dates:

Wednesday, October 3* 12:00pm – 1:00pm
Monday, October 8 1:00pm – 2:00pm

All info sessions will be held in Blum Hall B100A/B unless otherwise noted. Blum Hall can be located on the following map: http://bit.ly/Blum-Hall-Map

*Held in the Transfer, Re-entry, and Student Parent Center (105 Cesar Chavez). This session will have a special emphasis on completing the Minor as a Transfer student, but all students are welcome to attend.

The application to declare the Minor can be downloaded from the GPP Minor website and the deadline to submit it this semester is Wednesday, October 10th. Students may declare without having taken any of the courses; additionally, there are no pre-requisites.

Feel free to contact the GPP Minor Advisors at gppmi...@berkeley.edu with any questions.

10th National AMSA ARC/UCD Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Conference

**The 10th National AMSA ARC/UCD Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Professions Conference provides community-college, university, post-bac, and high school students, parents, and counselors with the information and skills necessary to succeed in the medical and health-professions school admission process. It provides a unique opportunity for direct contact with deans of admission, admission officers, financial aid officers, faculty, and staff from those institutions.

This year we will host deans of admission from some of the top medical schools across the country, medical students, and present over 120 dynamic pre-med workshops — a hallmark of the conference led by deans and admission directors. The speakers and events will provide you with in-depth information on issues ranging from the medical school curriculum, admission requirements, financial aid, and MCAT preparation, to public policy and clinical and research opportunities.

Over 100 medical schools and 25 public health schools are scheduled to attend this year. Moreover, representatives from over 300 programs will be present to directly answer questions during the Pre-Health Professions Fair.

The 10th National AMSA ARC/UCD Pre-Medical and Pre-Health Conference is scheduled to take place October 6-7, 2012 at the University of California, Davis, in the UC Davis Pavilion. Check out http://www.amsaarcucd.org/ for more information.
