*UC Berkeley Volunteers Around the World- Medical Brigade Opportunity*

Medical Brigade Travel Opportunity:

UC Berkeley VAW (Volunteers Around the World) is a medical service
organization that has traveled to multiple countries providing medical
service and care to those in need. This winter break we will be traveling
to The Philippines for two weeks during which time we will set up and run
mobile clinics, teach local children about health and hygiene, execute a
public health project, and culturally immerse ourselves.
This is an amazing opportunity for students who are pre-med, pre-health, or
are just passionate about traveling and public service!

If you are interested in joining Berkeley VAW and attending our winter
trip, submit an application by visiting:

*Cal-in-Sacramento Fellowship*

The Cal-in-Sacramento Fellowship program sends approximately 30 Cal
students to intern in public service in California’s capital every summer!
All Cal undergraduates are eligible to apply, and we work with every
student admitted into the program to find them an internship in Sacramento
that allows them to apply their academic interests and skills to public
service. Cal-in-Sacramento Fellows work for eight weeks in internships in
the offices of Senate and Assembly members, the governor's office, state
agencies, or nonprofit groups. The program provides free housing and
transportation for students, and stipends to help defray living expenses
are available on a need basis. Applications are due November 10th at 5 pm.

*Global Health Disparities Research Fellowship*

We are excited to announce that the 2015 Minority Health/Global Health
International Research Fellowship application is now open. The application
deadline is *November 1st 2014.*

The Minority Health/Global Health fellowship is a fully-funded program, an
initiative of the NIH, that seeks to empower under-represented minority
students in the health sciences by providing them opportunities to engage
in short-term *international research* and mentorship aimed at increasing
diversity in the fields of basic science, biomedical, clinical and
behavioral sciences. All majors are welcome!

Please visit http://globalhealth.berkeley.edu/mhirt/training.html to learn
more about 2015 opportunities, application instructions, eligibility
criteria and more.

*UC Davis Medical Center Department of Surgery: Pre-Medical Surgical
Internship, Mentorship, & Research Program*

The UC Davis Pre-Medical Surgical Internship offers a unique set of
opportunities for pre-medical students to work with and be mentored by
surgeons and physicians at the nationally recognized UC Davis Medical
Center located in Sacramento, California. This is not a mere volunteering
position; the program provides an opportunity to interact directly with
physicians in the Department of Surgery. You would be working with them
every step of the way from seeing patients in the pre-operational
consultation to observing procedures performed in the Operating Room, from
rounding in the early hours of the day to spending afternoon in the
clinics. In addition, you will attend bi-monthly workshops involving talks
from medical school professors, hands-on suture and cardiology labs, a
presentation from the Director of Admissions of the UC Davis Medical
School, and more!

*Application Deadline: November 15th, 2014. *For more information, please

*Tyron Lecture 2014*

The Grandmother and Human Evolution: William Tryon Lecture Series
Lecture | October 15 | 3-4:30 p.m. | Alumni House

Speaker: Kristen Hawkes, Professor, University of Utah
Sponsor: Department of Psychology

Hunter-gatherer ethnography, evolutionary life-history theory and
mathematical simulations point to ancestral grandmothering as a key to the
evolution of human life history. Possible consequences of grandmothering
extend from distinctively human sociality to patterns of male competition
and pair bonds. Questions about how we do it continue to uncover surprises.

*David Nelson seminar, **Lyman Laboratory at Harvard University*

*FRIDAY 10/17 @11am in **TAN HALL 775*

*David Nelson from the Lyman Laboratory at Harvard University*

*DISLOCATION AND ELONGATION OF BACTERIA*

Recent experiments have revealed a remarkable growth mechanism for
rod-shaped bacteria: specialized proteins associated with cell wall
elongation move at constant velocity in clockwise and counterclockwise
directions on circles around the cell circumference. We argue that this
machinery attaches to dislocations in the ordered peptidoglycan cell wall,
and study theoretically the dynamics of these interacting defects on the
surface of a cylinder. Unlike the dislocations typical in materials
science, the motion is predominantly climb (glycan strand extension)
instead of glide. The activated motion of these dislocations and the
resulting dynamics within a simple kinetic model show surprising effects
arising from the cylindrical geometry, with important implications for
bacterial growth.

*American Bone Health*

American Bone Health is the most effective resource for communities to
end the suffering associated with osteoporosis. We promote
independence, mobility and quality of life by preventing fractures
along all stages of life. We see healthy children growing up with
bones strong enough to carry them through a healthy, vibrant lifetime.
These children, their parents and their health care providers will
know what to do to build and keep strong bones.

Step 1. Sign up.
Go to http://www.americanbonehealth.org/ and click on “What you can
do” to fill out our form.
Or call our Bone Health Hotline at 888-266-3015.

Step 2. Get trained.
Our program will give you the tools and know-how to help others.

Step 3. Make a difference.
Share your wisdom at community events, such as health fairs,
fundraisers or a hospital lecture series.

In addition, we are also planning to form a student organization on
campus, which would be a Berkeley Team that would do outreach events
regularly in nearby communities. Aside from simply becoming a
volunteer, if you are willing to spend time founding a student
organization with us, please email cchang820...@gmail.com with a brief
introduction of yourself and your past volunteering/leadership
experience.

*Audeamus UC-Wide Multidisciplinary Honors Journal - now open for
submissions*

University Honors at UC Riverside is very proud to announce open
submissions for *Audeamus*, the UC-wide Multidisciplinary Honors Journal.
Deadline for submissions is *November 8, 2014**.*

The* Audeamus* journal was started at University Honors, UC Riverside in
2007and formerly published the works of undergraduate Honors students
across the UC system (this requirement has changed to include all students
who have at least a 3.0 GPA). The students chose to name the journal
*Audeamus*, which means “Let us dare” in Latin, as it “dares” to publish an
eclectic journal each year to showcase works of highest merit, no matter
what it is (as long as it is reproducible on paper). Categories include:
(1) non/fiction; (2) research papers; (3) poetry; (4) artwork/photography;
and (5) other. *Audeamus* has since published 8 journals and is excited to
begin the search this year for its 9thedition.

*To be eligible to submit, students are required to:*

1.) Be a CURRENT undergraduate student* enrolled (full time or part
time) at a UC school (UC Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UC Los Angeles, UC
Merced, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, UC San Diego, UC Santa Cruz); AND

2.) Have a 3.0 GPA at the time of submission, please email Audeamus
staff advisor Jane Kim at jane....@ucr.edu if a student has questions about
this requirement.

** NOTE: Students who just graduated (in the 2013-2014 academic year) from
the UC schools listed above are eligible to apply for this year's journal
if they have, for example, a senior thesis paper/project they completed
upon graduation and would like to submit this piece to the journal.
Entries from students who graduated further back than the previous academic
year are not accepted.*

The *Audeamus* website can be found here: www.audeamus.ucr.edu Please
take a moment to look through the website, and we’d greatly appreciate it
if you could forward the website on to any others that may be interested.
A pdf flyer is also attached to this email. We look forward to everyone’s
submissions— we can't wait to read them!
