The Center for Computational Biology will be offering the Berkeley Connect
Program in Computational Biology in Fall 2017. This is a great opportunity
for you to be part of a community of like-minded peers and learn more about
the fast growing field of Computational Biology.

When you enroll in the one-unit Berkeley Connect course in Computational
Biology 98BC (for first-years and sophomore) or 198BC (for juniors and
seniors), you will be assigned a graduate student who will serve as your
personal mentor for the semester. At the same time you'll be placed in a
small group with other students who share your academic interests.
Throughout the semester you'll receive one-on-one advising from your
mentor, and also participate in small-group discussions (with free food!),
special events featuring professors and alums, and field trips to explore
computational biology resources.

Below is the course description and enrollment information. We hope you to
see you in the course in the fall and please don't hesitate to contact me (
xuqu...@berkeley.edu) if you have any questions.

*Course Description*

Computational biology is a fast growing field that has applications in a
wide range of disciplines and careers. While its broad and
interdisciplinary nature means a wealth of opportunities, it can be
difficult to discern how to best become a computational biologist. Through
the Berkeley Connect Program, the Center for Computational Biology will
engage interested students in small group discussions about the various
paths of computational biology. We will discuss short-term concerns, such
as what to do while in college, to long-term goals, such as different
career options and the fast changing nature of computational biology. We
will help students develop a support network of peers, fellows, and faculty
and be informed of computational biology resources on campus.

Summer Business Program at Haas for Non-business Majors

Are you an undergraduate student who is not majoring in business? Are you
free this summer? Here is a chance to complement your undergraduate degree
with a Summer Business Program from Haas

The Haas School of Business invites you to consider the BASE Summer Program
(Business for Arts, Sciences and Engineering). BASE is a six-week business
boot camp that enables non-business majors to take business courses while
earning full academic credit
<http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/BASE/credit.html>. Some former BASE
students have gone on to earn MBA degrees, while others have accepted jobs
in marketing, product development, consulting, financial services, and
technology. BASE students receive many benefits, including custom
workshops, company visits, lunches, small class size with top professors
and Haas Alumni Network benefits.

The ideal participant of the BASE Program is an undergraduate student
majoring in liberal arts, sciences or engineering. BASE is the only premier
business summer program or institute where students can earn units
<http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/BASE/credit.html>.

*Application Process*
We encourage you to apply as soon as possible given the popularity of the
Program in the past 19 years.
<http://www.haas.berkeley.edu/Undergrad/BASE/students.html#2016year19> There
is no application fee. To apply or for more information please visit our
website at:

*What Our Alumni Say about the Program*
After BASE I ended up getting a job at Oracle in their sales department and
I love it here. I believe that BASE was a huge component of the success I
had getting this job, and knowing how to operate in a business setting. So
thank you for that! I also would like to note the reaction people have when
they find out I went to Haas. I've received a lot of positive feedback from
recruiters, managers, and my peers. Collin Barlow, UC Berkeley ’16, BASE ‘16

They call it Berkeley's hidden gem for a reason; its rigorous, exciting,
fun, challenging, looks great on your resume, and it’s an amazing way to
grow as a person and make connections with successful students from all
over the world. It's a program that transforms complete strangers from all
over the world into one big family that never wants to be apart. You are
going to wish the program never ends. I would recommend the BASE program to
everyone who wants to gain a deeper understanding of business, loves having
fun, and wants to create memories and relationships that will last forever.
Manvinder Singh, UC Irvine '15, BASE '15
You can visit our Facebook page <http://www.facebook.com/baseprogram> to
connect with recent alumni on-line.

*Financial Aid for Berkeley Students*
Financial aid may be available for eligible Cal students who have not yet
graduated. Many UC Berkeley students are eligible for summer financial aid.

The Genetic Epidemiology and Genomics Laboratory has a position available
for undergraduate(s) who are interested in gaining some lab experience
working with large datasets. This is a volunteer position.

The focus of the research laboratory is genetic, epigenetic and
environmental risk factor studies of autoimmune disorders including
multiple sclerosis, systemic lupus erythematosus, and rheumatoid arthritis.
The current projects are part of several well-established collaborations
including researchers at UC San Francisco and Kaiser Permanente Division of
Research, Oakland.

Laboratory assistants will perform literature and other genetic/related
database searches. They will assist with clustering and genotype calling of
a very large dataset consisting of MS cases and controls. This is a
separate position from our normal wetlab posting and is mostly computer
orientated.

Laboratory assistants must be able to commit to at least 10-15 hours/week
during the academic year and maintain a regular schedule. Previous
experience in epidemiology as well as molecular and cell biology, human
genetics or equivalent laboratory-related coursework a real plus. Strong
computer skills desired. Ability to work over school breaks also a real
plus.

If you are interested, please send cover letter and resume to
hqu...@berkeley.edu. Please include in the subject line: "Application For
Volunteer Position at GEGL - Clustering"
