Human Space Exploration
Bioengineering 155: Introduction to Bioastronautics 

Lecture: TTh 330-5pm, Discussion: Tu or Th 5-6pm
4 units letter grade or P/NP
CCN: 07369

Bioastronautics is the study of the environmental, physiological, and technical issues 
involved in human exploration of space.  Bioengineering 155 is a course designed to 
give students a hands-on introduction to bioastronautics and space science research.  
There are no prerequisites for this course, and enrollment from outside majors is 
strongly encouraged.


TOPICS
History of Manned Space Flight, the Space Environment, Human Physiology in Space, and 
Life Support Systems

GUEST LECTURE SERIES
Students will hear from Astronauts, NASA Engineers and Scientists, Cal Faculty, and 
other experts from around the nation.

FIELD TRIPS
Optional Field Trips will be arranged to NASA Centers and related laboratories.  
Destinations have included NASA Ames Research Center in Mt. View, CA and NASA Johnson 
Space Center in Houston, TX.

PROJECTS
Students will participate in a number of research and design projects to give students 
immersive experiences in space sciences, while meeting experts in the field.

OPPORTUNITIES
Space Science Outreach and Research opportunities will be available to students 
enrolled in this course.
