The IS&T Archiving Conference brings together a unique community of
imaging novices and experts from libraries, archives, records
management, and information technology institutions to discuss and
explore the expanding field of digital archiving and preservation.
Attendees from across the world represent industry, academia,
governments, and cultural heritage institutions. The conference
presents the latest research results on archiving, provides a forum
to explore new strategies and policies, and reports on successful
projects that can serve as benchmarks in the field.
Techniques for producing, acquiring, preserving, indexing, and
retrieving digital objects and images are explored in depth. The
conference also strives to present unique perspectives from industry
and academia on media and technology obsolescence, business models
for sustainability, formats and standards for archiving, and
solutions for content storage, access, and management.
The conference is a blend of invited focal papers, keynote talks, and
refereed oral and interactive display presentations. The conference
offers hands-on tutorial sessions on technical topics. The 2007
conference will also include a demonstration session at which

I'm currently enrolled in the Museum Technologies class at my graduate
program at Seton Hall University in New Jersey. For the semester term
paper, I have elected to write about Information Technology (IT) and how it
fits within the museum organization. While I have some information into
possible solutions (outsourcing, internal, etc.), I would really like to
include my own research about the subject. That's where I need your help!
Please answer the following questions, as best you can, so that I can gain

Several people talked about using Google Analytics at the Evaluation
Tools session at last weeks' MCN conference. There was a general
impression that there is a long waiting list to get the service. I
came home and was able to sign up immediately. (Implementing the GA
script on our pages may take a bit of time, though.)
I have been using some Google services going back a ways, so that may
have jumped me in queue. But the likeliest explanation is that there
is no more queue, or that it is very short. So, let me encourage folks
interested in this tool as a supplement to current web analytics, to
sign up at their earliest convenience:

And many thanks to the folks who put together that panel - it was one
of the more informative ones of the conference and was much enjoyed.

I am our resident techno-geek. Trained as a Networking tech. Until I
went back to work for the museum, they outsourced everything. Currently
I, with one maintance person handle 90% and outsource the remainder. It
isn't part of my job discription (like I actually have one) but I just
kind of inherited it. In our particular orginizational structure, I
report directly to our President, which gives me alot of leeway
regarding purchses and systems.

The latitude in decision making. My boss is not very techno-literate,
so alot of the final decisions are mine.

When something goes wrong, there is very little backup. Our networks
have been cobbled together over the years by many different vendors so
there is no one else that understands it enough to trouble shoot it.
If/when I get in over my head, it is not pretty.

We do a lot of facilities rentals (meeting rooms, etc.) so a large part
of our network capacity is to provide access to the rentals.

Yes, there was a waiting list for quite a while as Google added capacity
to the system, but usually you can just sign right up now.
I've been using this for a number of clients and very successfully. In
our case it's very easy to integrate because we have a plugin for the
content management system we're using that just automatically integrates
the Analytics code.

Hi everyone,
I was pleased to meet several presenters at MCN that are currently
working on problems and issues in museum technology through masters
and other academic programs. Perian Sully recently shared her
Master's thesis, today we have another similar request from Elton and
Sarah Sherman recently announced the formation of ARTiFACTs at
UCLA. It is exciting to see this activity and rewarding to see that
people are thinking of MCN as a place to look for answers.
I would like to know whether other researchers out there are
interested in forming a Research SIG. I'd take a pretty broad
definition of what constitutes research, including computer
scientists working on new image formats, development of new software
systems, access, description and retrieval standards, ethnographic or
quantitative survey methodologies. We might share areas of
research, methodologies, or find ways to work together on research
that could be submitted to other related conferences such as IS&T,
ASIS&T, M&W, JCDL, etc. The Research SIG might also serve as a
liaison for student groups like ARTiFACT.
As a current board member I am prohibited from serving as a SIG
Chair, but would happily contribute to a Research SIG if someone is
interested in taking up the charge. Information about SIG Charters

The Historic new Orleans Collection

Medium - 65 employees, 2 locations.

Yes, called the "Systems" department. We have four employees:
Director, Data Standards Administrator, Network Manager and Web Master
(a very recent addition). As director of the department I report to
the museum director. The department is very large for an institution
of our size but that is because we encompass many activities that are
typically incorporated in other departments of other institutions. The
department was created in the mid- 1980s to design and implement a
collections management system. Since then it has traditionally been
heavily involved in collections management/collections information.

Very little outsourcing. Primarily web hosting and recently the use of
various web services, though describing that as outsourcing is a bit
of a stretch. Development and customization of our collections
information software is done by the vendor. Outsource vendors report
to me.

The ability to provide a more nuanced solution to problems and to
identify institutional goals where IT can provide services that other
members of the institution might not be able to envision.

The lack of a "back-bench". I'm not a techno-geek, nor is our data
standards admin. The lion's share of technical expertise lies with our
network manager and web master. Particularly complex networking,
programing, or even scripting projects force us to contract outside
the institution. Likewise the provision of enterprise level storage
and networking solutions is more difficult to purchase, configure and
maintain on our own.

We're a combination of a museum, library and manuscripts repository
with a history of these units operating with great independence. Our
tech issues really center around providing integrated information
retrieval services to these disparate professionals and as a result,
while other institutions have concentrated on building out web sites
and large digital asset portfolios, we have had to hunker down with
content issues like data integration, metadata schemes vocabulary
development. Our big project for almost 7 years has been the
co-development of the Mint system with Minisis Inc.

Chuck Patch, director of systems, I oversee all information systems
development and implementation as well as handle phones, sigh. At the
moment this includes wiring-up a new building.
