We use PDF (which we may switch to PDF/A over time) to deliver content on
our "Katrina's Jewish Voices" site (http://katrina.jwa.org/ ). This is an
"online collecting" site where people can contribute any digital object in
whatever form is convenient. If the item is a Word document, or any of
several other formats, we convert to PDF. This has somewhat to do with
security - PDFs are less easy to modify (we don't lock the files currently,
so I don't want to overstate this benefit), somewhat to do with long-term
preservation (hence the impending switch to PDF/A), and somewhat to do with
wanting to do the best we can at recreating the intended environment (not
that we necessarily have the fonts) and providing a consistent view of the
object to site visitors.
