You know, I could see how a DAM might feed into a CMS--and it would be
a great idea--but would not want to be responsible for digital asset
management if the opposite were true--so much of what is required for
DAM is irrelevant and usually not present on a CMS.

I am curious, though. Is anyone using a DAM that is usefully connected
to their CMS? What is good/not so good about what you've got?
