Their letter doesn't say how they migrated the metadata. From the note it sounds as if it wasn't already embedded in the images. Having done some work with mashups, a little php and some regular expressions makes it pretty easy to scrape it out of the HTML. A number of script libraries then make it a fairly simple task (for those with the skills) to insert these as EXIF headers in the image.
