Amalyah, You might remember a similar scenario when in October 95 I applied to the finance department in our museum to fly all the way to San Diego to present at ICHIM/MCN 95. In this case our institution was very generous and actually ok'd the trans-Atlantic trip and the stay at the Del Coronado - but the real challenge was facing my colleagues in the conference and presenting the Paper titled - Museums and Art on the Internet.
At the time I felt a bit like an alien who had just flown in from the ether. The following year, thanks to David Bearman and Jennifer Trant, the Museums and the Web Conferences got started ... and the rest is now history. At least, next Saturday I can present in Second Life (or at least my avatar can) from the comfort of my living room - even in my pyjamas if I should so fancy.
