Marla,

some time ago, i did a preliminary analysis of a year's worth of
search log data from the Guggenheim Museum, in preparation for some
search term analysis that we are doing now within the context of
steve.museum

there's a summary blog posting here:

http://conference.archimuse.com/blog/jtrant/searching_museum_collections_on_line_what_do_peo

with a link to the full paper.

follow-up discussions with Seb Chan about the Powerhouse Museum's
searching showed that there seems to be differences depending on the
kind of museum. for example, there is a strong reliance on artists'
names at the Guggenheim that may not be true outside [modern?] art
museums.

the study was time-consuming, but it revealed a lot about what people
hope to find. i hope others share what they are doing here. there's
not a lot published.
