Hi Rowena,
If I understand correctly, the question is: how do we handle images in which multiple objects are represented? (ie, a group shot) For that, in the DAM we link the image to each individual object record; then when we push that image to TMS we create a media record for each one of those object records. What this means is that the same group shot image will appear in TMS for each linked object record. As far as identifying images: we try not to rely on filenames. In all cases, we link the image file to the TMS object record, identified by the TMS objectID. For group shots, we simply have an array of multiple objectIDs I'd be happy to discuss this in detail Shyam Shyam Oberoi Manager, Met Images The Metropolitan Museum of Art _____ From: Rowena Koh [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, July 11, 2008 12:44 PM To: Oberoi, Shyam Subject: Fwd: [MCN-L] Digital Asset Management System Dear Shyam, Further to your post on the MCN listserv, I wanted to ask via which fields your DAM and CMS exchange information. Currently the Vancouver Art Gallery has an automated script that allows the CMS to upload and link images from the object record to its related image based on the object accession number and image file name (which consists of the accession number), but this has presented a problem for objects with multiple parts. The way we have it set up means that images of parts are linked to their respective child records but not to the parent record. Can you tell me if you've had to deal with the same problem and how you have dealt with it? Thanks so much for any insight you can provide. That said, accomplishing all this required a fair amount of programming as this is not something that was supported "out-of-the-box" Shyam Oberoi Manager, Met Images The Metropolitan Museum of Art -----Original Message----- From: mcn-l-bounces at mcn.edu [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Deborah Wythe Sent: Wednesday, July 09, 2008 3:15 PM To: Museum Computer Network Listserv Subject: Re: [MCN-L] Digital Asset Management System We are using Luna Insight as a DAMS at the Brooklyn Museum. I wouldn't say it speaks to TMS with ease -- there was a considerable programming effort involved by our IS staff -- but we are currently using them in tandem, doing a weekly TMS data copy to Luna for object metadata and an automated daily image load/link from Luna to TMS. We looked at several systems in 2005 and did not find one that made this kind of thing easy, but it's doable if your have people with time and skills. We are planning to upgrade soon to TMS as our CMS. With this, we are also looking into a Digital Asset Management System (DAMS) that will speak with relative ease with TMS. I was curious as to what other Museums that are using TMS as their CMS use as their DAMS and what their experiences have been with whatever DAMS they currently use.
