Subject: DAM SIG @ MCN SIG "Unluncheon Unmeeting" and Program

To all MCN members who are interested in DAM issues:

The new DAM SIG has been officially formed, and I will be the interim chair of
the new SIG. At the coming MCN conference in Atlanta, we will have a program on
Thursday, November 17, 2011, 11:00a.m.-12:30 p.m., to discuss a variety of DAM
issues (the program details are attached below). Please join me and the
panelists (Emma Wolman of Portland Art Museum, Perian Sully of Balboa Park
Online Collaborative, Megan McGovern of Corning Museum of Glass, and David
Dwiggins of Historic New England) for a lively discussion.

The DAM SIG will also meet at the SIG "Unluncheon, Unmeeting" on Friday, 11/18,
from 12:45 to 2:00 PM at Max Lager's. Please join us to discuss the program
topics or formats for the coming MCN conferences, election of chair or vice
chair for the DAM SIG, or any ideas for our online communication.

See you all next week! Have a safe trip!

Cheers!

Billy

Abstract:

Although digital asset management has been a common topic among museums,
libraries and archives in the last several years, many of our member
institutions are still struggling with a lot of issues and processes
surrounding DAM and its related systems and tools. While many of our members
are in the process of selecting, evaluating or implementing their
first-generation of DAM systems, a few early adopters or implementers of DAM
systems are actively evaluating their existing systems and making plans for
their future development and growth. The proliferation of new digital media
types and the explosion of digital assets in museums have made it a more
pressing issue.

Session Description:

Panelists:

*Emma Wolman, Digital Assets Manager, Portland Art Museum

*Perian Sully, Project Manager, Digital Asset Management and Online Access,
Balboa Park Online Collaborative

share their DAM implementation experiences. Our panel speakers represent
museums or archives of various backgrounds and scales, and they all use
different digital asset management systems. Each one of them will give an
overview of their system or highlight any particular aspects of their
implementation. After their presentations, there will be moderated discussion
on the following topics:

*DAM systems vs. collection management systems

*Data interchanges between the two types of systems

*Metadata structures and standards

*Local collections of digital assets

*Non-still image digital assets, i.e., 3D image, audio and video files

Subject: [MCN-L] Calling all SIG members (and all curious about SIGs) to an
"Unluncheon" in Atlanta! Friday 11/18/11

Details have just been announced for the MCN Special Interest Groups'

"Unluncheon, Unmeeting" at MCN 2011 in Atlanta week after next. This new event
will be held instead of the individual SIG meetings familiar from past
conferences.

The SIG Unluncheon, Unmeeting will take place on Friday, 11/18, from

12:45 to 2:00 PM in a private room at Max Lager's, a five-minute walk from the
hotel. All MCN attendees--SIG members and the curious--are welcome. Each SIG
will have a table for free-flowing discussion, and table-hopping will enable
you to join the conversation with more than just one SIG.*

Advance registration required by e-mail to conference at
mcn.edu<mailto:conference at mcn.edu>

<mailto:conference at mcn.edu> Then pay $15 in person at the conference

registration desk. MCN is underwriting some of the lunch expense to minimize
the cost to participants. This should be a fun event, so don't miss it!

*Topical areas covered by the SIGs include: digital media, information
technology, intellectual property, metrics & evaluation, digital asset
management, semantic web, small museums, and standards. There also are regional
SIGs for California and the Northeast.
