Hi Will,

I tell everyone who blogs on our Museum blog site,
http://www.mymuseumoflondon.org.uk/blogs/, that they can be informal,
but must treat it like any other communication tool in the Museum and
obey the same rules, e.g. not abusing the system, making sure they are
not writing anything discriminatory, etc. I also provide training on how
to use the software and basic guidelines like how many words roughly,
etc.

I also make sure that all bloggers are aware that they must get
permission from their line manager to make sure they are allowed to
publish content about particular projects.

But beyond that, I do not have any approval/moderation process. If I
come across anything such as images not being edited properly, or minor
spelling, I would edit it - but on the whole, the blog entries are
published by the individuals and I rarely go and change anything.

Hope that helps. If any Museums/Institutions do have guidelines, I would
be interested in seeing them too.

Thanks.
Bilkis.

Subject: [MCN-L] Blogging editorial policy

I have been telling my administration that as a rule, museum blogs are
not subject to the same editorial standard as official museum
communications (newsletters, catalogues, labels, brochures, press
releases, etc.). My understanding is that museums do provide potential
staff bloggers with guidelines, and that there may be some minimal
review for factual errors, blatantly poor grammar, typos, etc. But is
this so? Our Deputy Director, commenting about the blogs of a well known
museum, said "it's not possible that they have so many good writers on
staff; they must be getting lots of editorial input."

Anyone care to comment?

Will
