Colleagues,
Apologies for any previous cross-posting, but I thought the subject may be of interest to folks here. I'm just following up on this digipres conversation from early February that dealt with archiving raw still image formats, particularly DNG. Barry Wheeler and I presented a paper on the topic at the recent IS&T Archiving 2010 conference in The Hague. For anyone interested, here are links to both the paper and presentation: http://digitalcommons.uconn.edu/libr_pubs/23/ http://digitalcommons.uconn.edu/libr_pres/25/ Michael ================================= Michael J. So, stay tuned. Michael -----Original Message----- From: atroncale at yahoo.com [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, January 27, 2010 2:42 PM To: digipres at ala.org Subject: [Digipres] archiving in RAW instead of TIF I did not find a discussion of the RAW format of any kind within this list's past posts. Many institutions are struggling with multiple-terabyte archives now and storage/maintenance costs are significant in these tight budget times. Given that many digital capture devices initially save in RAW format why not consider the RAW format as the preferred archival file? It allows for on-demand processing into TIF and when further modifications and/or adjustments arise one may do so from the legacy RAW file. Most important, the file size it is significantly smaller than a TIF. If the initial capture file is in RAW why shouldn't it be the accepted file type for archival storage? Thanks in advance for your feedback. Anthony Troncale Digital Library Consulting 140 Seventh Avenue Suite #3C New York, NY 10011 atroncale at yahoo.com www.phobot.com 646-645-7947
