Dear All, For your delectation, the latest post on the Digital Media section of the V&A blog summarises some great observational research of real people using live digitally-mediated museum experiences here at the V&A and at the Natural History Museum, by researchers from UCL and Institute of Education
It has interesting take-aways for people working in museum digital media, interactive and learning roles about * how group dynamics between group members of families and between strangers affect usage * how physical interactions play an important role (e.g. through non-verbal communication affect, the urge to touch and interact physically with people and objects, etc * how visitors' extensive experience of their everyday digital devices influences their ability to use things we provide * How space, atmosphere and mood affect expectations * ergonomics and how physical comfort and natural expectations affect the design of interactives at a human scale (e.g. positioning of screens) * factors associated with motivations and flow This is a summary from a presentation of unpublished academic research due out in November. The authors have kindly allowed us to publish in advance to distribute findings and help practitioners http://www.vam.ac.uk/blog/digital-media/digital-exhibits-observational-research I found it fascinating. Hope you do too.
